PHYSICAL
Tall frame with a lot of room to grow. Frame has not changed much since debut year of 2024.
STRENGTHS
Flatt has an exceptional plus sweeper that mixes up batters. Fastball is promising, despite mediocre control.
WEAKNESSES
Arm slots are significantly different between fastball and off-speed pitches. Batters able to identify this may be able to make contact. Aside from plus sweeper, all of his other pitches are lackluster. Poor control on the fastball, even though it does sit consistently around 93.
SUMMARY
Flatt is still a blank canvas and the Yankees have a lot to work with. His arsenal is better suited for a bullpen role, especially since his velo started dropping considerably around 60 pitches and the 4th inning. Although four-seamer has a good chase rate, the control on the fastball needs to be better to excel at more advanced levels. If the Yankees pare Flatt’s arsenal from five pitches (4-seam, sweeper, slider, change-up, cutter, curveball) down to three (eliminate slider, cutter and curveball) or less, both he and they can focus on throwing quality pitches.
The lower velo on the fastball isn’t incredibly concerning – he sat 90.5 to 94.2 MPH in this outing – but it is if it has poor control, and especially so if the average velo on the sweeper, his best pitch, was 79.9 MPH compared to 92.5 on the fastball. Batters made contact on the fastball more than any of Flatt’s other pitches in this outing.
Flatt could prove to be a real gem down the road, but will need significant work. However, a projection to be a key reliever in the Major Leagues is very possible.
